So... I've been working on a concept for a story regarding Dinosaurs and I've had to think through a few things. My MAIN concern being how can I have a bunch of different species from different prehistoric periods all in the same environment without making it too much like Jurassic Park or completely ignoring prehistory. I wanted to be able to have dinosaurs from the Cretaceous or Jurassic or whatever be in the same environment at the same time. So… I've come up with this short prequel that will allow me to explain why some of my characters are around each other despite potentially not being alive at the same time prehistorically. And this is what I've come up with. It caters to my love of Dinosaurs, and my love of post apocalyptic stories. So yay! This will be a Dinosaur story. There will be no humans. There might be surviving critters from the human era, but no humans in this comic; I just wanted to give a description of the fictional universe this is going to take place in. So, let me know what you think!
I wrote this prequel up pretty quickly, so it probably needs some editing. I'll probably make this into a paraphrased prequel comic and I'll edit it then.
This story begins, not in the prehistoric past like the nature of this story would lead you to believe, but in the distant future. A future where, due to their own hubris, humans are believed to be all but extinct. A future where a different, but not new class of animal rule the world. For these animals ruled the world once before man kind was even dreamt about, until a mass extinction 65 million years ago removed them from planet earth and paved the way for the eventual evolution of man kind. These long lost rulers of the prehistoric world were the Dinosaurs.
During the time of humans, as time progressed and pressure was placed upon the worlds leading scientists to discover or create the next big scientific breakthrough, man kind truly believed themselves master of God when they were finally able to clone their first Dinosaur. Unlike famed movies where genetically created Dinosaurs were confined to an Island, meant to be some tourist attraction, Dinosaurs were cloned on the mainland, in secret for many years after their first success. As more and more scientists pushed boundaries creating more and more different species from all periods of prehistoric time, they knew it was only a matter of time before these creatures could be revealed to the public.
With the presentation of the first dinosaurs, filmed by well guarded news crews with the dinosaurs confined to secure, underground facilities, the human race cheered. Of course, there would always be those nay sayers, those who threatened retribution from God in the face of arrogant, scientific creationism, but no one took those 'religious fanatics' seriously. Maybe they should have, for as more demand came from the public to show off their wonderful advancements in science, the scientists and independent funders of the project became careless."
With a increase of fame and stardom, and with that a decrease in over all common sense, it wouldn't be long before something disastrous happened. With the increased publicity, a new crowd of human extremists emerged into the fold; a new group of animal activists with a focus on the captive, cloned Dinosaurs. No one took them very seriously, obviously the notion of setting Dinosaurs free was ridiculous, but as the extremist group grew more and more righteously frustrated the danger level rose. Then, one night, after months of planning, the Dinosaur activists stage a large, world wide invasion of the underground facilities that house the dinosaurs with the soul purpose of releasing the dinosaurs from their prison. It would be this well meant, but devastating mistake that would change the course of human history.
Dinosaurs were released from their containers and chaos rained. Scientists were trampled and attacked, and too the horror of the activists the animals turned on them too in their fear and rage. Unsuspecting guards were knocked aside as dinosaurs tour from the facilities, up to the world their prehistoric ancestors once knew, but that they had never known. It didn't take long for the worlds government to discover that the creatures were free to escape into the wild of the world, and measures went underway to put a halt to the situation… But it would all be in vein.
Those dinosaurs that escaped into the wild adapted quickly and started to breed and hunt the natural wildlife; and in bad cases the human inhabitants fell prey. Armies were dispatched, but it was like trying to find needles in a hay stack; except the needles are deadly and hunting you too. Panic set in; without-rule-of-law-situations flooded cities and towns. But things didn't get really bad until the various governments started bombing towns infested with dangerous dinosaurs. Then civilians, angry at being bombed by their own government, rose up against them. And soon it was Dinosaur against Man against Man. Man was outnumbered by the beasts, and by their own waring nations. And with that, their numbers dropped, and the Dinosaurs numbers rose.
Freed from the scientific facilities that were their birth place, with ample amount of food, and the convenience that the humans were killing more of each other off than Dinosaur kind, the dinosaurs flourished. It took many years, but eventually all that could be made out of the previous human civilizations were ruin, and scattered groups of rogue human groups gripping to survival. Poorer countries that did not invest in the creations of Dinosaurs lasted longer, but it wouldn't be long after that humans were all but considered extinct and a new world order set in.
The dinosaurs, like ecosystems before them, eventually balanced out. With humans gone, and most of the original native wild life hunted by the dinosaurs into extinction, the Dinosaurs fell into a sense of balance. Great roaming parries, savannas, and plains became home to massive herds of herbivores, with carnivores sticking in smaller groups or alone close by. Cities and towns were left to crumble, with only the swift, smaller, agile dinosaurs scavenging their ruins. Aquatic dinosaurs that had been trapped in facilities based in ocean coves dominated the oceans and great, otherworldly giants flew the skies. The age of man was gone. And the way of the Dinosaur was resurrected.
